              Southwest Jiaotong University Visits Universities in the USA

              From September 25 to 28, a delegation from SWJTU composed of 4 members including Wang Xiaoru, Assistant to President, Liu Xueyi, Secretary of the CPC Committee of School of Civil Engineering, SWJTU and Dai Qi, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of School of Information Science and Technology of SWJTU, were invited to visit University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Utah Department of Transportation and the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in San Francisco, so as to expand the exchange and cooperation between SWJTU and universities in the US.

              On September 25, members of the delegation arrived at the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in San Francisco and met Education Counsellor Tang Yun. Tang Yun was deeply impressed by students of School of Information Science and Technology of SWJTU who visited the consulate-general in the summer vacation. The School of Information Science and Technology of SWJTU has organized nearly 50 students to exchange, visit and practice in the Silicon Valley, UC Davis, Stanford and other quality universities for three consecutive years. Tang Yun highly affirmed the results through such exchange and visit, and expressed a willingness to boost the cooperation and exchange between SWJTU and universities in the US.

              On the morning of September 26, members of the delegation had a discussion with Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, Dean of College of Engineering of Utah State University, Rose Qingyang Hu and Thomas H.Fronk, Associate Deans of College of Engineering, Jacob Gunther, Director of Engineering Department, Carlos M.Braceras, Director of Department of Traffic Engineering, D.Keith Roper, Director of Biological Engineering Department, David G.Tarboton, Director of Utah Water Research Laboratory, Ning Fang, Director of Engineering Education Department and other professors. Wang Xiaoru introduced the basic information and competitive disciplines of SWJTU. Dean Kaluarachchi spoke highly of the SWJTU's achievements in transportation field, and hoped that the two sides could explore the possibility of cooperation in all fields. Leaders of all departments present paid high attention to and showed interest in the school-running mode of the SWJTU-Leeds Joint School, proposed a number of school-running-related questions and expressed their intention to actively discuss the potential for establishing such cooperation relationship. The delegation held talks with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer and the Department of Traffic Engineering respectively, visited the Utah Water Research Laboratory, the largest water research agency with the longest history in its kind in the United States and made field studies at the Electric Vehicle and Road Laboratory.

              On the afternoon of September 26, the delegation visited the University of Utah. Founded in 1850, the University of Utah is profoundly influential in image forming, chip, computing, network, etc. Praised as the Holy Land of Computer Graphics, it is also one of the cradles of Internet. It comes out top regarding the number of technological startups created on campus in the United States. The delegation held talks with Professor Richard B. Brown, Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Utah. Mr. Brown indicated, the College of Engineering at the University of Utah would like to develop the cooperation relationship with SWJTU and would actively promote teacher-student communications and researches in relevant fields between both sides. After the talks, both parties signed the Memorandum of Cooperation.

              On the morning of September 27, the delegation had a meeting with Professor Michael E. Barber, Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Liu Xueyi and Mr. Barber discussed teacher-student communications, scientific research cooperation, etc. Mr. Barber expressed his intention to advance the cooperation between both sides from the student exchange program and then further enlarge the in-depth cooperation in other areas. The delegation held a meeting with associate professor Liu Xiaoyue who researches road traffic operation and control and paid a field visit to the Road Traffic Control Laboratory.

              On that afternoon, the delegation also visited the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and communicated with Executive Director Carlos M. Braceras and Chief Engineer Eric Y. Cheng. Mr. Braceras extended warm welcome to our delegation. He introduced that the first railway crossing North America was formally joined and opened to traffic in north Utah in 1869. Nowadays, Utah takes lead in traffic network management and the construction of traffic big database. This achievement is inseparable from participation by and cooperation with local universities. He indicated, the advantages of SWJTU in traffic engineering are in line with the needs of Utah's traffic development and would like to improve the cooperation with SWJTU, together with other universities in Utah. The delegation also listened to the introduction about the road emergency rescue plan as well as setting and case studies of the emergency processing system of UDOT by Rod McDaniels, Manager of the Project Department and Vincent Liu, Engineer of the Project Department, UDOT

              On that afternoon, the delegation also visited Brigham Young University and held a meeting with Professor Michael Jensen, Dean of the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering, Professor W. Vincent Wilding and Professor Jim Trent, associate deans of the College of Engineering, Professor Norman L. Jones, Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Professor Grant G. Schultz of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as Associate Professor Chia-Chi Teng of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Both parties would like to further promote exchanges and cooperation. After the meeting, the delegation visited the Traffic Big Data Laboratory. Both this laboratory and the Road Traffic Control Laboratory of the University of Utah share the real-time traffic data of UDOT and conduct cooperation and research in the traffic big data.
